GOLD PANNING & GEM MINING ACTIVITIES AT THE MUSEUM OF THE WAXHAWS

Plan your school field trip or family outing to the Museum of the Waxhaws, and visit our new gold panning and gem mining facility.

We have hosts and gold panning instructors to teach you about earth and geological sciences, and gold panning techniques. You can take your skills to your local backyard creek and look for gold like the prospectors who first found gold in North Carolina.

Here you can also enjoy the walking trails, Indian Village, and a 1700’s Homestead exhibit.  The indoor exhibits here tell a story about regional history from the time European Explorers saw the Waxhaw Indians living, through the Revolutionary War until the town of Waxhaw developed as a bustling cotton distribution and textile center, beside the railroad that forged through a landscape of farmlands. Part of this area’s history is the NC Gold Rush.  Many people came here to work at the Howie Gold Mine.  Gold was as much of an industry as cotton here for a period of time.

Plan your visit – Start by contacting us using the form on our contact page, or call the Museum at 704.843.1832.
